Exhibition of the Antikythera Mechanism and Shipwreck at the Archaeological Museum of Athens

All antiquities recovered in 1900-1901 and 1976 from the legendary shipwreck off the islet of Antikythera, south of the Peloponnese, will be presented for the first time in a temporary exhibition from April 2012 and for a year at the National Archaeological Museum. The recovery of the shipwreck itself was the first major underwater archaeological expedition. It was undertaken by sponge divers, with the assistance of the Greek Royal Navy (1900-1901). Correspondence, press, photographs and films will document the story of its discovery and recovery and the methods used.

Ancient Theater of Delos to be restored

The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) of the Greek ministry for culture and tourism has given green light to the restoration of the ancient theatre of Delos, one of the most important religious centres of ancient Greece, an island of the Cyclades where Apollo, god of light, was born according to mythology.

Professor Curtis Runnels’ Work on Crete Makes Archaeology Magazine’s Top Ten

Professor Curtis Runnels and other members of a research team have discovered stone tools that date to between 130,000 and 700,000 years old at two sites on the island of Crete. The presence of these tools on Crete indicates that human ancestors may have developed seafaring capabilities much earlier than previously believed.
